James Wigby

Founder & CEO, GardenTech (Suffolk Group)

Allett is a quintessentially English manufacturer of the finest cylinder lawnmowers that money can buy.  With its own fine pedigree in professional cylinder mowers, dating back to 1965, in 2011 Allett ventured into the domestic market by acquiring the tooling and design rights to the former Atco range of Balmoral, Royale and Club machines, Qualcast Classic Petrol/Electric and Suffolk Punch lawnmowers from Bosch Lawn&Garden.  Production of these mowers thereby moved from the former Suffolk Works site in Stowmarket to Hixon in Staffordshire.

Unfortunately in selling off the range, Bosch created confusion by licensing the Atco, Suffolk Punch and Qualcast brand names off separately to the machines that proudly bore their names.  The prestigious Atco badge can now be found on a range of cheap plastic Chinese mowers imported by Global Garden Products (parent company of Mountfield).  Needless to say it is no coinsidence that the Atco brand no longer holds the Royal Warrants from the Queen or Prince of Wales that it was once famous for.  Similarly, the Qualcast brand is now exclusively licensed to Homebase and is now printed on everything from hand trowels to weed killer.  Luckily the British-built Atco-Qualcast range lives on in spirit under its new Allett branding.
